At Home Safety Tips

  1. Do not open your door to anyone you do not know or were not expecting through a previous arrangement.
Examples of what you might encounter include the following:
**A stranger coming to your door requesting your help for a medical emergency, their broken down car, or money. Do not open your door; call 911 to notify police of the situation.
**Strangers may come to your door to solicit various services, i.e. magazine subscriptions, yard work, etc. Notify the police of suspicious activity.
  2. Report any suspicious sounds, activities, automobiles, or persons to the police.
  3. Keep keys in your possession.
Don't place them under mats, over doors, in mail slots, or in the other, accessible hiding places.
  4. Lock all doors and windows when you leave your home...
Even if it's only for a few minutes. It is also advisable to keep windows and doors locked even when you are at home, especially if your residence has ground floor entries.
  5. Get involved in a Neighborhood Watch program and/or neighborhood association.
Minimally, it will help you get know your neighbors and establishes a cooperative security system.
  6. If you return to your residence and think it has been entered illegally, do not enter.
Find a telephone and call the police.
  7. Use timers for lamps, radio, or television to give your home an occupied look or sound while you're not around.
  8. Stop mail and newspaper deliveries or have a neighbor pick them up during times you are away from your residence.
