Home Safety Tips
- Do not open your door to anyone you do not know or were not expecting
through a previous arrangement.
Examples of what you might encounter include the following:
**A stranger coming to your door requesting your help for a medical
emergency, their broken down car, or money. Do not open your door;
call 911 to notify police of the situation.
**Strangers may come to your door to solicit various services, i.e.
magazine subscriptions, yard work, etc. Notify the police of suspicious
activity.
- Report any suspicious sounds, activities, automobiles, or persons
to the police.
- Keep keys in your possession.
Don't place them under mats, over doors, in mail slots, or in the
other, accessible hiding places.
- Lock all
doors and windows when
you leave your home...
Even if it's only for a few minutes. It is also advisable to keep
windows and doors locked even when you are at home, especially if
your residence has ground floor entries.
- Get involved in a Neighborhood Watch program and/or neighborhood
association.
Minimally, it will help you get know your neighbors and establishes
a cooperative security system.
- If you return to your residence and think it
has been entered illegally, do not enter.
Find a telephone and call the police.
- Use timers for lamps, radio, or television to give your home
an occupied look or sound while you're not around.
- Stop mail and newspaper deliveries or have a neighbor pick them
up during times you are away from your residence.
